Health and Wellness
Adams 12 Five Star Schools believes the health and well-being of our students needs to be a priority. The childhood obesity statistics are frightening, and with obesity comes the risk of type 2 diabetes, asthma, joint problems, high blood pressure, depression, and low self-esteem. We want to be part of the solution to these problems, along with parents and the community.
To support the health and well-being of all students, Adams 12 Five Star Schools has adopted a District-wide Wellness Policy. To view this Superintendent Policy, click here.
The "Wellness, Physical Activity and Nutritional Procedures" can be found here. This document provides ideas for implementing and/or supporting the Wellness Policy.
Here are some ways Adams 12 schools are instilling healthier habits in their students:
- Cherry Drive Elementary held a “Wellness Adventure” on Halloween with several health-related stations put on by community organizations. Stations included walking safety, gymnastics, dental health, yoga and mental health, nutrition, social emotional health, and a pumpkin fun run!
- The PE teachers at Coronado Hills Elementary and Stukey Elementary set-up several health stations in their gyms for students and parents to visit at Parent/Teacher Conferences.
- The Riverdale Stinky Shoe Club awards any student who completes 20 hours of exercise outside of the school day with a stinky shoe paper to be posted in the gym each month.

- Skyview Elementary created a school-wide “Healthy Kids are Happy Kids” activity. Students were encouraged to think about ways that they’re healthy and then practice their writing skills to display around the school. The hallway leading to the cafeteria is now a reminder to be healthy!
Several schools participated in International Walk to School Day on October 5th. Leroy Drive Elementary even dedicated an entire week in October to Walking and Wheeling to school! - Hillcrest Elementary is dedicated to encouraging healthy lifestyles by promoting the Harvest of the Month that is being served in the cafeteria. Several teachers wear Harvest of the Month t-shirts throughout the month with facts about the featured fruit or veggie. The PE teacher also highlights the Harvest of the Month in class and on his website.
- The PE teacher at Stukey Elementary holds "Get up and walk with Mrs. Anderson" every Wednesday morning. Students, parents, and teachers are all invited to start their day with some exercise and socializing, followed by breakfast in the cafeteria.
