Language Acquisition Support Services (LASS-ESL)
VISION FOR THE SUCCESS OF ELLs IN ADAMS 12
- ELLs learn the English language through ESL instruction as well as language development opportunities within the context of grade-level content
- ELLs have access to the academic content at their grade level
- ELLs have their linguistic, academic and cultural needs met at their own neighborhood schools
- ELLs are grouped heterogeneously with native English speakers to benefit from native English-speaking models when appropriate
- ELLs have the same opportunity to participate in higher level content classes, enrichment experiences, and extracurricular activities as do their native English-speaking peers
- ELLs receive appropriate intervention for their specific language and academic needs from the appropriate educator when first best instruction (ESL + appropriate classroom instruction) is not sufficient
The goal of language acquisition support services for English Language Learners in Adams 12 Five Star Schools is to promote students’ learning of both social and academic English, while also being given opportunities to learn grade level content. This goal is achieved through the use of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction as an ELL’s first best instruction in collaboration with appropriate literacy instruction in the regular classroom. ESL methods are designed to promote language development in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and ESL instruction is based on the Colorado English Language Development Standards. ESL instruction is offered by highly qualified ESL teachers. Additionally, it is the district expectation that all teachers develop teaching skills in order to help ELLs learn and succeed. This includes providing ample and appropriate opportunities for language development as well as sheltering grade level content in such a way as to make it comprehensible to ELLs. Together, we CAN meet the needs of all students.
